An experimental program was conducted to study the mechanical characteristics of the brittle material gypsum G5. Based on the results of a series of tests, the tensile and compressive strength limits, the modulus of elasticity and the critical value of the stress intensity factor were obtained. The influence of a regular stress concentrator on the strength of specimens tested according to the modified Brazilian test was investigated. All specimens failed due to the formation of a normal tensile crack propagating along the diametrical line along which the load was applied, from the hole to the outer surface of the disk. Increasing the hole size reduces the load required to fracture the specimens, demonstrating a scale effect. Calculations of critical load were carried out using non-local failure criteria. The calculation results are qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with the experimental data. The average deviation of the calculations from the experimental data was 4.25%. The potential for developing three-parameter failure criteria for systems with regular stress concentrators subject to the scale effect is demonstrated.
