An assessment of the efficiency of regenerative braking in a mining dump truck operating on typical routes within an active open-pit coal mine is presented.  Typical driving cycles were formulated based on real-world telemetry data collected from trucks in operation. Mathematical modeling of the vehicle's movement along the route was conducted, accompanied by an analysis of the power balance. This analysis enabled a comparison between the energy consumed for propulsion and the energy recovered through regenerative braking. The study results in a quantitative determination of the share of recoverable energy and identifies the key limitations on the system’s efficiency. Requirements for the traction battery are formulated, including an assessment of its necessary capacity. The need for employing additional braking resistors to dissipate excess energy is analyzed. The obtained results allow for a quantitative evaluation of the proportion of available energy and the constraints defining the system’s efficiency. Furthermore, they provide a foundation for optimizing regenerative braking systems on mining equipment.
