The paper studies the issue of focusing tube erosion. A hypothesis proposes that cryogenic cooling can protect the jet-forming channel’s surface by emergence an ice layer in the ultra-jet creation zone. Modern approaches to temperature monitoring in ultra-jet generation equipment states are considered. An experiment was organized and conducted: a test system based on a waterjet cutting head was created; the focusing tube was cryo-cooled during titanium workpiece processing with parallel thermal imaging picture recording. Additionally, the microroughness profiles of the obtained experimental workpieces were studied. Comparing temperature images from cooled and uncooled focusing tubes allowed us to assess cryogenic modes’ effectiveness, propose improved protection methods, and outline promising research areas for cryotechnology in waterjet cutting.
